A Message from Our Chair

Happy New Year!

This time of year I always find myself reflecting back upon the last twelve months. Each year I continue to be amazed at all of the things that occurred that I couldn’t have begun to imagine a year ago. Reflecting on SCGSNP is certainly no different! I can confidently say that we have had an incredible year thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Directorate Board and significant involvement from our membership! The accomplishments of the past year would not have been possible without all of the graduate students and new professionals that have volunteered their time and talents to serve our committee and profession.

Let me provide a brief list of a few of hte many exciting SCGSNP accomplishments from 2011:

  • Hosted two free webinars: one in conjunction with SCLGBTA to look at integrating LGBT theory, and one focusing on undergraduates going into Student Affairs.
  • Received more award nominations than in any recent year with 30+ submissions!
  • Had over 150 people volunteer to assist in reviewing programs, scholarships, and awards!
  • Hosted our first ever winter case study with 20+ teams participating!
  • Collaborated with the Governing Board on the creation and implementation of the ACPA Ambassadors program as a year-long involvement opportunity.
  • Coordinated with 2012 Convention Team to co-host the convention orientation in conjunction with convention colleagues to provide better mentorship and guidance to first time convention attendees.

In addition to the list above, there have been many strides in moving the committee forward.  We have reviewed the programs and services that we provide, sent membership assessments, and are striving to continue to create the best professional experience for all our members.

In particular, one recent intiative was the creation of a committee to review the structure and elections of SCGSNP.  The committee, which was open to all members, met several times and engaged in an extremely thorough assessment.  The committee recently made a recommendation that was accepted unanimously by the Directorate Board.  The new structure should will also allow for the development of new projects, services, and initiatives within SCGSNP.

With all the excitement from 2011 I can hardly wait to see all that we will accomplish together in the coming year! Looking forward, here are a few of our goals for the coming year:

  • Provide additional webinars and opportunities for members to share in presenting webinars.
  • Redesign socials at convention to facilitate intentional networking.
  • Engage members in SCGSNP events and networking outside of convention.
  • Increase social media presence.
  • Intentionally focus on services for doctoral graduate students.

I sincerely thank each of you for your continued involvement and support of the Standing Committee.  Together, with your leadership and volunteerism we can continue to improve SCGSNP and the future for our profession!  It is my commitment to serve and represent you to the best of my ability. If you have comments, thoughts, or suggestions please feel free to contact me at chair.scgsnp@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing you in Louisville in March!
