PROGRAM STATEMENT
Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with concentration in higher education (cognate in student affairs):  This Ph.D. concentration has been developed in a manner to support working professionals. Non-traditional course delivery formats including on-line and other distance learning techniques, weekend courses, and intensive summer classes are utilized. Applying theory to practice is an overall theme, with the case-study approach to learning utilized extensively. Besides being targeted toward working professionals, this program contains a very unique Professional Inquiry, Research, and Dissertation Core for all students. This approach essentially “flips the dissertation process on its head,” by having students focus on possible dissertation topics during the first year of their program (both through the initial doctoral studies seminar and their first professional field experience course). This will allow students, during their second and third years, to be working on their research ideas while taking core research and higher education courses.

MA in Higher Education & Student Affairs (HESA) Leadership: This master’s concentration is designed to prepare reflective scholar-practitioners to work in community colleges, and public or private colleges and universities. The curriculum is a blend of course work on student affairs, leadership, higher education, and diversity. In recognition that student affairs educators must be prepared to work effectively with diverse populations, all students are required to take a “Diversity & Equity in Higher Education” course, as well as an individually designed diversity cognate.

PROGRAM MISSION
The mission of the HESA Leadership masters concentration is to prepare scholar-practitioners who will bring a deep understanding and appreciation of leadership and multiculturalism to diverse higher education settings.

PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
Recognizing the complexities of higher education settings, our master’s concentration in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) Leadership emphasizes the development of broad-based knowledge regarding educational systems, leadership principles, and multiculturalism. All students will take a required course in “Equity and Diversity in Higher Education,” as well as develop an individualized 6-credit diversity cognate with the help of their advisor.
