The Indiana University Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) master's program is designed for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, competencies, and philosophy required for exemplary professional practice in 21st century post secondary educational institutions and other settings.
Program Description: Students come from diverse geographic locations and academic backgrounds. In recent years, 60 percent of our students have come to IU from outside the Midwest. Some students come to the program with student affairs-related positions, and many come directly from a variety of undergraduate studies. The majority of students range from 24 to 30 years of age and approximately 15 to 20 percent are students of color.
Desired Learning Outcomes: Graduates of the HESA master's program at IU will demonstrate a capacity for integrative learning and application that makes possible creative solutions to persistent and unanticipated problems that affect student and institutional performance.
Admission Requirements: In order for students to be accepted in the program, students must have achieved a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 and scored at least 900 combined on the verbal and quantitative sections (of a maximum 1600) and a 3.5 score on the analytical writing section (on a scale of 0-6) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). In addition to the School of Education admission requirements, applicants must interview with a member of the faculty. Because we value practical experience, all students must obtain a graduate assistantship or be employed at least part-time in a related campus office while pursuing the degree.
Career Possibilities: Recent graduates of the HESA program at IU hold positions such as residence hall directors, union directors, financial aid counselors, student activities directors, and assistant dean of students, or continue graduate studies at the doctoral level.
